Thackmoor House
Welcome to Thackmoor House — a Victorian two-storey cottage situated in the heart of the village of Great Corby.
Great Corby is high above the River Eden on the eastern side. The village of Wetheral lies on its western bank. There is a railway over the river (Wetheral Viaduct - the picture across the top of these pages) with a footpath alongside linking the two villages.
Many of the older properties in Great Corby were owned by the Howard family who occupied Corby Castle until the mid 1990’s. The Castle is now in private ownership
The small village green lies immediately to the front of the cottage with the Queen’s Inn Public House diagonally opposite currently undergoing building works to include a small restaurant. There is a second village pub further down the village near the railway crossing which has been refurbished. It too will serve food in due course.
A few metres to the rear of the cottage there is a children’s play area which borders the village playing field.
The footpath over the river leading to Wetheral begins at the railway crossing. There are pleasant walks along this side of the river as well as a lovely view of Corby Castle. In addition there are two hotels, a pub a good restaurant and a village shop. |
