Augill Castle in Kirkby Stephen
Since its building in 1841 Augill Castle has seen its fair share of colourful incumbents not least the man whose vision the castle first was.
John Bagot Pearson, ‘a gentleman of leisure and considerable means’ from Kirkby Lonsdale commissioned the castle in 1837. His vision was of a weekend retreat where he could entertain his friends in a style reminiscent of a medieval royal banquet.
Augill Castle has a long tradition of memorable hospitality.
It is a house which is happiest when it is full.
“A truly amazing place.” - Les Routiers
Augill Castle is ideal for exclusive-use house parties and weddings. But when it is not hosting celebrations it is a perfect get away for weekends or midweek breaks.
Simon & Wendy Bennett run the castle in a modern, informal style, with one over riding tenet: to do everything they can to ensure guests leave feeling they have stayed with friends.
When the castle is not booked for weddings or parties it is the best Bed and Breakfast and Simon & Wendy hold special dinner weekends throughout the year when guests can join in the informal dinner parties.
“The meals are informal feasts.” – Special Places to Stay in Britain
“There is no competition – the only place with real class in the Eden valley is Augill Castle.”
