Augill Castle in Kirkby Stephen
This African themed room is the ultimate foil to the traditional expectations of a gothic castle. It is modern and decorated with art from Wendy’s colonial childhood.
Two huge gothic arched windows look south across the lawns to the Yorkshire Dales and a turret serves as the wardrobe. The bathroom is a riot of mosaic and porcelain tiles in earthy tones and the super king size bed can split into twins.
If that isn’t enough, there is a private terrace with steamer chairs to soak up the sun and the room is also accessible for guests in wheelchairs. A guests wrote that they felt as relaxed here after the first day of their holiday as they would normally feel after a week.
