Barry Porter, woodcarver & furniture maker
I fashion and assemble solid oak furniture entirely by hand, employing 17th century designs and traditional techniques throughout.
Much of the furniture crafted in the middle 17th century, the Jacobean period, was produced generally by local 'joyners' using local materials. Oak was the main timber, and carving a much used decoration. The fact that many pieces can be accurately dated and traced to original owners stems from the practice of carving initials and the dating of individual products. Oak will last many hundereds of years and the craftsmanship of these 'joyners' has ensured that many wonderful examples survive to this day.
