Western Lake District
Barry Porter, woodcarver & furniture maker
From the very beginning, I have full control over my furniture. I obtain all my oak from the surrounding local forests, and, due to the relative small quantities, have the freedom to choose only the highest quality timber for my products. Once I have chosen the timber, I must transport it. I use a portable band saw to convert the trees to my own requirements.
I then air dry the timber for up to five years (depending upon the thickness).
All the drying is performed at my home, in the attached out-buildings or my custom-built workshop, where I perform most of my work. This has the added advantage that I can monitor the wood, to make sure that it is properly cared for. |
