Carlisle, Hadrian's Wall & Borderlands
Carlisle and the Borderlands is probably the region
within Cumbria most steeped in history. Carlisle is, and always has
been, the administrative centre for Cumbria. Being the only city
within the county and taking it’s geographical location into
account go some way to explaining the turbulent history of the city
and its inhabitants and the need for such an imposing gateway.
The city centre is compact in relation to other
cities which means the journey to the major attractions like the cathedral can
be taken on foot. The history of this part of Cumbria cannot be researched
without mention of such places as Hadrian's
Wall and Lanercost Priory.
