Carlisle, Hadrian's Wall & Borderlands
Pike Hill lookout tower over Hadrian's
Wall
Before the Roman wall was built there were a number
of Forts already in use on the Roman road between Corbridge and Carlisle.
This lookout tower at Pike Hill was incorporated within the wall because
of its commanding views. The wall was originally built to ‘separate
the romans from the barbarians’ according to Hadrian's biographer.
