Carlisle, Hadrian's Wall & Borderlands
Wetheral Viaduct
The coming of the railway (Carlisle to Newcastle)
in 1836 brought many changes to the small peaceful village of Wetheral.
First came the builders of the viaduct, gangs of hard working navvies
who also played hard. One local farmer realising there was money to
be made in beer and permission was granted to sell it.
The railway itself allowed locals to travel further
afield even if it was just down the line to Carlisle to visit the market.

almost 100 feet to the fast flowing river Eden.
