Coledale, near Braithwaite
The Coledale valley leads up from Braithwaite,
near Keswick, up to Force Crag mines, below Grisedale Pike
and Crag Hill, at the far end of the valley. The mines, now
abandoned, were first operated in the 1860s – their product
being lead. Crag Hill can be seen in the picture at the end
of the valley covered in snow. A classic day’s walk known
as the Coledale Horseshoe can be made from Braithwaite, taking
in peaks surrounding the valley including Grisedale Pike, Crag
Hill and Causey Pike.
