Dalton's Cave - Borrowdale

Dalton’s Cave lies on the flanks of Castle Crag, and is accessible from the path that runs along the River Derwent in the Borrowdale Valley. Originally a walling stone quarry (and evidence of this is obvious on the approach to the cave entrance), the cave acquired its name because of an eccentric resident, a ‘Professor of Adventure’ called Millican Dalton (1867 – 1947). He was actually a guide and tent maker by profession, and was one of the first pioneers in the development of lightweight camping equipment. His carved slogan can still be seen on the wall of the cave which reads ‘Don’t waste words, jump to conclusions’.
