North Lakes
Friar's Crag
John Ruskin called this view one of the three
loveliest in Europe. A short walk from the boat landings and
jetties this view is not to be missed. From this small, rocky
peninsula all of Derwentwater’s four islands, Derwent
Isle, Lord’s Isle, Rampsholme Island and St Herbert’s
Island can be seen. It was St Herbert’s Island on which
the monk lived – he died, as his wish, on the very same
day as his good friend and tutor St Cuthbert, Bishop of Lindisfarne
on 20th March 687. Beyond the islands, the ‘jaws’ of
the Borrowdale valley can be seen, with Scafell Pike (3206ft),
the highest mountain in England, at the far end.
