Grange-in-Borrowdale
The setting of this hamlet is stunning; it
lies at the ‘jaws’ of Borrowdale, beneath Maiden
Moor and High Spy to one side and Grange Fell. Castle Crag
further down the valley along the picturesque River Derwent.
From 1209, the village was a ‘grainge’, a farm
for the monks at Furness Abbey and was the remotest of its
estates in the county. There is a small shop and a café to
stock up on provisions, before heading off for one of a wide
choice of walks from this point.
