North Lakes
Thirlmere

Thirlmere is actually a man-made reservoir that was created from two smaller lakes at the end of the 19th century. The water helps supply the city of Manchester by gravity-drawn tunnels, still used today. There was local outcry when the proposal was put forward to raise the water levels but to no avail – the small hamlet of Armboth and a number of small farms were lost under the water as a result. Remnants of the dwellings can occasionally be seen when there is a water shortage, and the levels subside.
