Lake District Peninsulas
Furness Abbey

Founded in 1127, Furness Abbey was a grand and very important abbey for the surrounding inhabitants. Once iron was discovered in the area this, together with wool and meat from farming and seemingly endless supplies of timber, did a great deal for the Abbey's well-being. These ruins give some indication of its sheer size and importance.
