South Lakes
Coniston Water
The fells of the Old Man of Coniston and
Wetherlam overlook Coniston Water, and its rolling wooded banks
in the distance. The lake itself was host to the world water-speed
record at 260.35 mph, set by Donald Campbell in 1959. Coniston
was chosen to host this event due to its remarkable straightness – at
almost 5 miles long, there is only a small bend at its southernmost
end. Campbell was tragically killed in his boat Bluebird in
this lake in 1967. Nowadays, a trip on the restored steam yacht ‘Gondola’ can
be enjoyed at a more relaxing pace.
