South Lakes
Hawkshead
Clustered around the square, Hawkshead is
a quintessentially Lakeland village – whitewashed stone
cottages, narrow cobbled alleyways and streets flanked by timber
archways. Walk around the village and you will soon come across
the Grammar School where Wordsworth studied from 1779 – 83
before going to Cambridge, and the church which gives fine
views over the village and the nearby Esthwaite Water. There
are many other old buildings of interest including The Kings
Arms overlooking the square and is one of several historic
hostelries.
