Western Lake

Caldbeck
The name Caldbeck is derived from the fast
flowing cold stream that was used to drive the many watermills
of the village. Corn, wool and wooden bobbins were the main
production lines but copper and lead from the many nearby mines
brought prosperity to what remains one of Lakeland’ s
prettiest and more appealing villages.
On venturing into the church grounds you
will find the headstone of John Peel, one of the more enduring
countryside legends, along with the tombstone of the Harrison
family. Mary Harrison was better known as the maid of Buttermere,
the most celebrated beauty of her day.
