Whitehaven - Tall Ships
In Summer 2002 the world's largest fleet
of historical sailing ships visited Whitehaven harbour for
a 5 week period giving the public an opportunity to go aboard
and experience at first hand these magnificent vessels.
Kaskelot, Phoenix and The Earl of Pembroke
were on show, the largest of these being Kaskelot - a 155ft,
3-masted barque. Her current rig is of the 1860 period and
she carries 17 sails and a crew of 18. She has starred in many
TV roles, most recently as Ernest Shackleton's Endurance, which
saw her return to the familar waters of Greenland.
