Wigton town centre
Wigton is situated 11 miles south west of
Carlisle and has been in existence since before the Norman
conquest. It is a small market town with mainly Georgian design
buildings made of red sandstone. The impressive memorial fountain
shown here is built of granite and has four bronze sculptures
by the Pre-Raphaelite sculptor Thomas Woolner. Originally on
this site stood a wooden market cross.
